Sharon van der Laak is a Canadian author and mom of two young and curious bookworms. She loves creating narratives that inspire giggles and problem-solving in young children. As a parent in a two-mom family, Sharon is always on the lookout for children's books with LGBTQ+ representation and is delighted to have added to the selection with Too Cold Marigold.
Marigold does not want to come out from under her blanket on this cold winter morning. “It’s too cold!” yells Marigold. Marigold bundles up in a few extra layers of clothing, but soon… “It’s too warm!" How will she get it just right? Marigold's two moms and younger sibling look on while she figures it out.
In this children's picture book, Marigold tunes into her body as she explores finding the right clothing to get her body warm… but not too warm! Perfect for kids learning to dress for the weather, families with two moms, and anyone wishing to add more representation of LGBTQ+ families to their children's book collections.

Too Cold Marigold was a precious book that I thoroughly enjoyed reading with my kids! I love this type of children's literature that allows my kids to think outside of the box and realize that people live very diverse and valid experiences.

This book does a super sweet job of capturing the importance of validating a child’s sensory needs! It also does a beautiful job describing Marigold’s interoceptive awareness (noticing her inner sensations, giving them meaning, and taking action to support those sensations). It would be a great read with kids to help them build those “noticing” skills and self advocacy skills. The illustrations by Amanda Walther are very sweet too! We gave it 5 stars! - The OT Parent Coaches
This slice-of-life book happily adds to the growing number of picture books where the parents' LGBTQ identities are incidental to the tale.... It's a cheery tale of daily life that should resonate with many families. - Mombian
Too Cold Marigold is a sweet story that proved to be a great conversation starter in our home about problem-solving. My five-year-old daughter loved the silliness of watching Marigold put on and takeoff multiple layers of clothing. There’s lots of life lessons in this book that are easy for younger children to grasp. It’s been a great addition to our at-home library. - Amazon customer
This book was adorable! I loved the story. It was light-hearted and sweet. I am often too cold or too hot, and also wear mismatched socks. I can't wait to gift this to a younger human to enjoy. - Amazon customer
I’m always on the look out for simple, gentle stories for my children about parts of their everyday life they can relate to. This is a lovely book that’s just the right pace for my littlest ones. I’m particularly glad it features queer parents in a very casual way - this kind of representation is so needed but still hard to find. - Amazon customer
